Magnetic Fields and Electromagnetism

We are planning 7 problem sets on the topic of Electromagnetism. Most problems are multi-part problems requiring an extensive analysis.

The problems target your ability to apply concepts of electric circuits and magnetic fields in order to analyze situations in which a moving charge induces a magnetic effect.

Problem Sets

Set EM1: Force on a Moving Charge in a B-Field
7 Problems - Medium Difficulty

Use the relationship involving a charged particle moving through a magnetic field to determine the magnitude and direction of the force on the charge from the magnetic field.

Set EM2: Bainbridge Mass Spectrometer
8 Problems - Hard Difficulty

This assignment analyzes the different parts of mass spectroscopy involving moving charges through electric and magnetic fields.

Set EM3: Force on a Current in a Wire in a B-Field
4 Problems - Medium Difficulty

Use the relationship involving a current in a straight wire positioned in a magnetic field to determine the magnitude and direction of the force on the wire from the magnetic field.

Set EM4: Force on a Current in a Wire in a B-Field App's
8 Problems - Hard Difficulty

Set EM5: Ampere's Law for Current in a Straight Wire
7 Problems - Hard Difficulty

Use Ampere's Law to relate the current in a straight wire to the magnetic field that surrounds the wire.

Set EM6: Ampere's Law for Solenoid and Toroid
2 Problems - Medium Difficulty

Use Ampere’s Law to analyze the magnetic field created by the current in a solenoid and toroid.

Set EM7: Biot-Savart Law for Loop and Helmholtz Coils
3 Problems - Hard Difficulty

Use the Biot-Savart Law to analyze the magnetic field created by the current in a loop at the center of the loop and along an axis perpendicular to the plane of the loop.
